There's a New Sheriff in Town!
Kristin Graziano made history on Nov. 3 after toppling a 32-year incumbent and becoming the first woman and first openly LGBTQ person elected as sheriff in the state of South Carolina. Running on a platform of accountability, transparency, and leadership, Sheriff Graziano vowed to make changes at the Charleston County Sheriff's Office. Since taking office in January 2021, she has begun to heal wounds with the immigrant community with her cancellation of the 287(g) agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and taken steps to diversify the ranks. A 33-year veteran of law enforcement, Sheriff Graziano is using her skills and training to improve conditions with incarcerated youths and strengthen accountability of the law enforcement agency from members of the community.
